Put a Dent(ure) in Your Practice

In this month’s AGD podcast interview, Wes Blakeslee, DMD, FAGD, talks to Joseph Massad, DDS, the director of Removable Prosthodontics at the Scottsdale Center for Dentistry in Arizona and faculty member at Tufts University School of Dental Medicine in Boston, the University of Texas Dental School at San Antonio, and the Oklahoma State University College of Osteopathic Medicine.

Intraoral Acinic Cell Carcinoma

Drs. da Silva, Graner, Jorge, and Lopes review a report on a 47-year-old man with an ACC on the left buccal mucosa that histologically was characterized by cells that resembled the serous cells.

Ontario Dentists Fight Tooth Decay
Parents and the Canadian government are being asked to take more action in fighting tooth decay among children in a special report released by the Ontario Dental Association (ODA). According to ODA President Dr. Larry Levin, “Tooth decay is the most common chronic childhood disease, one of the leading causes of absences from school, and only nine percent of Ontarians know that it's an infectious disease.” The report offers recommendations for parents on improving the oral health of their children, as well as calling on the government to assist those who are high-risk. The special report was the outcome of the International Association of Dental Research (IADR) conference held in Toronto this past July.
Dental Disease and Bulimia
Bulimia is a Dental Disease, released in October, connects dentists and eating disorder professionals to bridge the treatment of the oral and mental health implications of bulimia. According to author Brian McKay, DDS, “Twenty-six percent of all bulimia is first diagnosed by a dentist.” Dr. McKay’s book delves into the psychological causes of bulimia, and offers a new approach to treating these patients.

Biological Warfare
Dentists may be the first clinicians to interact with bioterrorism victims, and such an attack could rapidly overwhelm our health care system. Learn about the different types of bioterrorism agents, symptoms of the disease, and therapies for treatment in “Biological Warfare: The Dentists’ Defense,” featured in the November issue of AGD Impact. AGD Members: Read the full issue.
AGD in Medical News Today
Ranked worldwide as a number one source for medical news by Google, MSN, and Yahoo, the online medical and health news journal Medical News Today, recently featured findings from a General Dentistry study linking oral health and overall health in “The Tooth Whispers.” The original study, “Dental Loss Linked to Dysmenorrhea,” can be found in the current issue of General Dentistry.
New Dentists: Meet the Media
Congratulations on becoming the newest member of the dental community. By graduating from dental school, you have achieved a major accomplishment. And now that you have landed your first position in a dental office, you are ready to put your experience to work. So how do you introduce yourself to the community and bring in patients? The AGD recommends sending a press release to your local media.
Distributing a press release is easy. To get started, check out a sample template of a press release . Once your press release is ready, mail or e-mail the release with a black and white photo of yourself to the city, features, health or managing editor at your local newspaper. Be sure to follow up with each media contact within one week to make sure they received the release and to ask if they are interested in printing the story.
News that appears in your local media outlets can reach a large number of people in a short amount of time. By sending a press release to your local media announcing your recent graduation from dental school and new position with a dental office, more people can learn about who you are.
